Moms’ Depression May Delay Babies’ Growth

by The Kid's Doctor Staff

New moms listen up! Depression is not only bad for you, it can also harm your baby.

A report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed developmental and social delays in babies with depressed mothers.  The AAP says pediatricians should routinely screen new mothers for depression.

The AAP said that every year more than 400,000 babies are born to depressed moms.  Estimates say that between 5%-25% of women develop post-partum depression.

The AAP recommends that severely depressed moms should seek treatment for their depression.
