Picking a Pediatrician

by The Kid's Doctor Staff

Choosing who will be your child’s pediatrician is one of the most important decisions a parent will make. “You want your pediatrician to be your partner in parenting, so finding that perfect fit can be tricky,” says pediatrician Dr. Sue Hubbard.

If you are a first time mom, Dr. Hubbard suggests that you start with recommendations from your obstetrician. She also suggests you talk with other moms. “I think you hear the good, the bad and the ugly in the community. So I would ask my friends who have young children ‘Where do you go to the doctor and do you like them?’”

Once you have a few names, Dr. Hubbard recommends that you interview them. You should ask questions about how the office works, scheduling, parenting philosophy, how calls are returned, how after-hours emergencies are handled, and accessibility.

Dr. Hubbard says it is especially important for your child to feel comfortable around their pediatrician. “Let your child dictate if they want to see a same-sex pediatrician and encourage your child to talk with the doctor.” Dr. Hubbard also says that if you are not satisfied with your pediatrician, let them know and find a new one if necessary.
